KCR’s Security Downgraded: What Changed?

Former Telangana Chief Minister, K. Chandrashekar Rao, was discharged from Yashoda Hospital today. Simultaneously, the Telangana government has decided to reduce KCR’s security detail. Previously enjoying Z+ security as CM, KCR’s security status has now been downgraded to Y category. Under this change, KCR will now have a reduced security team consisting of 4+4 gunmen and a single escort vehicle.

Additionally, a hundred-member security detail will be stationed at his residence to provide an extra layer of protection. However, he will no longer have access to a central security fleet. This shift in security measures aligns with the customary adjustment that occurs when there’s a change in government. Former Chief Ministers without established security threats typically experience a reduction in government-funded security, which is what KCR is now facing.

Furthermore, this change isn’t limited to KCR alone. Former MLAs and ministers won’t receive government-provided gunmen, while ex-ministers who currently serve as MLAs will have a scaled-down security team of 2+2 personnel. Exceptions are made for individuals like Akbaruddin and Raja Singh, who will retain their elevated security due to political reasons.

This restructuring is part of a broader policy where security allotments are adjusted based on perceived threats and roles within the political landscape. KCR, now an ex-CM, is experiencing a standard reduction in security detail, reflecting the protocols followed post-transition of power in government.
