Netflix has recently revealed its Telugu film slate for 2024, presenting an exciting lineup of titles poised to engage audiences worldwide. Notable entries include “Devara” starring NTR, “Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire” featuring Prabhas, and a range of other intriguing projects. However, the most surprising announcement is Netflix securing the streaming rights for “Pushpa 2,” starring Allu Arjun.
This development signifies a victory for Netflix over Prime Video, which had the rights to the first installment. Despite the controversy surrounding the early release of “Pushpa” on Prime Video just 21 days after its theatrical debut, the film emerged as a blockbuster, attracting a significant number of new subscribers.
In an unexpected twist, Netflix has now claimed the streaming rights for “Pushpa 2: The Rule.” Initially, it was anticipated that Prime Video would host both “Pushpa” movies, following its approach with the KGF series. However, Netflix seems to have strategically outmaneuvered Prime Video in securing the sequel.
The global success of “RRR” on Netflix may have played a role in building trust among Telugu filmmakers, or perhaps there were astute negotiations happening behind the scenes. Netflix already boasts an impressive lineup, including “Devara” and “Salaar,” among others. Prime Video presumably should have vigorously competed to retain the rights for “Pushpa 2,” even at a premium.
The sequel was considered Prime Video’s flagship for 2024, making it disheartening to see it effortlessly slipping into Netflix’s hands. Regardless of the tactics employed, Netflix’s acquisition of “Pushpa 2: The Rule” stands as a significant triumph for the streaming giant and a considerable setback for Prime Video.
