The Telangana state cabinet convened at BR Ambedkar Secretariat, and during the hours-long meeting. BRS working president KT Rama Rao announced a major decision – the merger of Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) with the state government.
This move is expected to benefit approximately 43,373 TSRTC employees. KTR informed the media that a bill for the merger would be presented in the upcoming Assembly sessions. The decision has sparked controversy, with opposition parties labeling it a political tactic ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled later this year.
Some even compared it to a similar move made by YS Jagan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh in 2019, where APSRTC was merged with the state government. However, due to financial constraints caused by the pandemic, the merger process in AP is yet to be completed. Apart from the TSRTC merger, the Telangana cabinet focused on transportation and healthcare.
It was discussed to build double-decker flyovers at key intersections and to expand the metro rail system. The TS cabinet also gave its approval for the construction of four new medical schools and hospitals throughout the state, each having a capacity of 2,000 beds. Overall, the resolutions taken during the cabinet meeting revolved around preparations for the upcoming Assembly polls.
