As the upcoming Telangana assembly elections draw near, a surge in leaders defecting between parties has gained momentum. Recent reports indicate that Pothuganti Ramulu, a prominent parliament member representing the Nagarkurnool constituency within the same district, is preparing to shift his allegiance from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to the Congress party.
Ramulu’s political journey has been marked by shifts in allegiance. He was a three time MLA from the Achampet assembly constituency under the TDP. Notably, he served as Minister for Youth and Sports Affairs in Chandrababu Naidu’s cabinet from 1999 to 2004. However, his electoral fortunes deteriorated following the split of AP state in 2014, prompting him to join the BRS Party in 2016.
In 2019, he secured victory as an MP from the Nagarkurnool parliamentary constituency on the BRS ticket. Nevertheless, a sense of being overlooked within the party due to the prominence of local MLA Guvvala Balaraju has fueled Ramulu’s discontent.
Sources indicate that sensing this dissatisfaction, the team led by Sunil Kanugolu from the Congress party has initiated contact with Ramulu, aiming to lure him into their fold. His alleged demand for an MLA ticket from the Achampet constituency indicates his bargaining stance. Should this transition succeed, Ramulu might depart from the BRS and embrace the Congress party.
