The recent election results in Telangana marked a surprising victory for the Congress party, toppling the ruling BRS. However, while the BRS leadership reflects on their defeat, the spotlight has shifted to the Congress party and its choice for the Chief Minister (CM) position. Although the Congress hasn’t officially declared a CM candidate, rumors are swirling.
Revanth Reddy, Bhatti Vikramarka, and Uttam Kumar Reddy are speculated as top contenders. Speculation suggests Revanth Reddy is a front-runner for the CM role, triggering debates about the Deputy CM position. Bhatti Vikramarka and Ponnam Prabhakar are reportedly vying for the role, with Vikramarka seeking a sole Deputy CM position and Prabhakar pushing for it under the BC quota. Lobbying for key ministries is also said to be fervent.
The party seems divided over the CM position. Vikramarka’s supporters are advocating for him as CM, not Deputy CM, questioning why Revanth Reddy, a relative newcomer, might supersede party seniors. Meanwhile, the party’s high command is in talks with Sivakumar and Mallikarjun Kharge to finalize the CM candidate amidst this internal discord. Revanth Reddy and Bhatti Vikramarka were both strong campaigners against CM KCR, with Reddy’s role as Telangana Congress Chief since July 2021 significantly boosting the party’s standing.
Bhatti Vikramarka’s 1400 km ‘People’s March’ also played a pivotal role in Congress’ success. Uttam Kumar Reddy is also in contention due to his prior leadership in the Telangana Congress. The internal conflicts and speculations continue as the Congress aims to solidify its leadership in Telangana following this unexpected electoral victory.
