Bhimavaram’s Battle: Pawan Kalyan, TDP, And The Emerging Players

Bhimavaram, historically a stronghold for the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), has seen a shift in its political landscape in recent years. TDP secured victory in the constituency six out of ten times since its establishment. However, the dynamics changed when Pawan Kalyan, a prominent figure, chose to contest from this seat.

This move altered the demographics, prompting TDP to reevaluate its strategy. In the 2019 elections, TDP’s candidate Pulaparthi Ramajaneyulu, a two-time MLA, was sidelined to support Pawan Kalyan. Despite being a strong contender, Ramajaneyulu’s lack of effort led to TDP slipping to the third position, while YSR Congress’s Grandhi Srinivas emerged as the winner.

Anticipating Pawan Kalyan’s potential return in alliance with TDP, the party seems to have taken a cautious stance regarding the seat. The lack of clarity from the party’s leadership regarding the ticket has resulted in a state of inactivity. The presence of a substantial Kapu population in Bhimavaram has kept Janasena, led by Kotikalapudi Govindarao, engaged in the constituency. Govindarao expresses interest in contesting if Pawan Kalyan decides not to enter the race.

Moreover, the increasing Christian conversions in the area have reportedly favored YSR Congress. Bhimavaram’s political dynamics have undergone shifts due to Pawan Kalyan’s involvement, altering TDP’s traditional stronghold. The upcoming elections remain uncertain, with various parties and aspirants vying for the Kapu vote and addressing other evolving demographic factors.
