As the BJP grapples with waning popularity ahead of the Telangana elections, there was a strategic move to court Scheduled Castes (SCs), potentially through the long-awaited announcement of SC sub categorization by Prime Minister Modi. In Telangana, the Madiga castes constitute 60 percent of the SC population, wielding considerable influence in 20-25 constituencies.
Analysts argue that decisions regarding SC sub categorization could sway the electoral outcome, particularly in segments where Madigas are a significant community. The Madigas, despite reservation benefits, express dissatisfaction and demand sub categorization. The Madiga Reservation Struggle Samithi (MRPS) has persistently advocated for this for three decades.
Aligning with the MRPS could position the BJP favorably, countering the Dalit Bandhu scheme by the BRS. In October, MRPS founder Mandakrishna Madiga submitted a petition to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, indicating a positive response from the Central government.
Reports hint at Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Telangana on November 11, where an announcement on SC sub categorization might be made, potentially reshaping the political dynamics in the region. This move underscores the BJP’s strategic bid to consolidate support and navigate the intricate socio-political landscape in the run-up to the crucial elections.
