In a shocking turn of events, veteran composer Raj, known as one half of the Raj-Koti duo, passed away due to a cardiac arrest on Sunday (May 21). Leaving the film and music fraternities in deep sorrow. Raj, also known as Thotakura Somaraju, was a mere 68 years old and is survived by his wife and three daughters. His last rites were conducted at Maha Prasthanam in Jubilee Hills. Many celebrities from the film industry expressed their condolences on the untimely demise of Raj.
India’s top music composer AR Rahman took to Twitter to share a picture of Raj, accompanied by a heartfelt tribute. Rahman wrote, “Rest in peace Somaraju Garu…I can never forget the pleasant memories working with Raj-Koti in the 80s.” It is widely known that before Rahman rose to prominence as an independent music director, he collaborated with the Raj-Koti duo for eight years, serving as a keyboard player and programmer.
Rahman shared a strong bond with Raj-Koti, considering them close friends. In numerous interviews, he expressed his admiration for Raj and Koti. Both Raj and Koti were elated when Rahman achieved global recognition by winning the prestigious Oscar for The ‘Slumdog Millionaire movie, shaking the Indian film industry with his talent.
