The AP Government has launched a controversial program that provides a monthly allowance of Rs 200 to volunteers and other job holders, specifically for purchasing the Sakshi newspaper. This move, seen by many as self centered and unusual, has raised concerns and was subsequently challenged in court by Ushodaya Publications.
The case was brought before the Delhi High Court, which took the step of issuing notices to key figures including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister (CM) Jagan Mohan Reddy, his wife Bharathi, and the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC).
The court has raised questions about the intentions behind offering a financial allowance exclusively for purchasing a particular newspaper to government-paid employees. Jagan Mohan Reddy, Bharathi, and ABC have been given a timeframe of six weeks to provide a valid explanation for their actions.
The court’s next hearing on the matter is scheduled for September 22. Notably, Sakshi newspaper is known as the mouthpiece of the YCP. The decision of the state government to use public funds to promote a specific newspaper has faced criticism from various quarters, leading to a negative public response.
