AP: YSR Legacy Sparks Congress Revival?

The 138 year old Indian National Congress (INC) is hoping to resurrect its influence in Andhra Pradesh by appointing YS Sharmila, a member of the powerful YSR family. AICC president Mallikarjuna Kharge and Congress main leader Rahul Gandhi announced Sharmila’s appointment to lead the Andhra Pradesh Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) during a recent meeting at the Congress headquarters.

Sharmila is the president of the YSRTP and the Daughter of former CM YS Rajasekhar Reddy. Rahul Gandhi sought opinions from state party leaders regarding Sharmila’s leadership in the state Congress. Apart from two former MPs, everyone expressed support for her. However, concerns were raised about the potential similarities between Sharmila and her elder brother, YS Jaganmohan Reddy. Rahul assured measures would be taken to prevent any such resemblance, affirming that the decision was final and warned against any deviation.

This step adds an interesting dimension to the telugu state political world, especially considering the possible reaction of Jagan’s mother, YS Vijayalakshmi, to Sharmila’s leadership in the Andhra Pradesh Congress. Since the family disputes after the 2019 elections, Vijayalakshmi has supported her daughter Sharmila, who had differences with her brother and formed the YSRTP in Telangana, backed by Vijayalakshmi. Vijayalakshmi’s allegiance to Sharmila now raises curiosity about her upcoming political stance in Andhra Pradesh.
