A police party, which arrived from Kadapa to nab a notorious matka gambler was attacked in Tadipatri town of Anantpur district on Sunday. Circle Inspector Hamid Khan, who led the team, sustained head injury and was shifted to government hospital in Anantapur.
The incident took place when Kadapa police team, without taking assistance from local police, raided the house of the gambler Rashid Khan in Vijayanagar Colony of the town.
Panicked at the sudden entry of the police, associates of Rashid attacked the police with sticks and iron rods.
Gamblers numbering about 20 did not relent even when the Kadapa police showed their ID cards.
Irate family members of Rashid Khan even set the Bolero vehicle of Kadapa team on fire which led to the tension in the area. Later, Tadipatri rural police rushed to scene of action and rescued their Kadapa counterparts. Meanwhile a fire tender was summoned to douse the flames. Local police said they had not been informed of the raid.
