Technology, like a two-edged sword, possesses the power to be harnessed for both positive and negative purposes, contingent on the intentions of those who employ it. Regrettably, advanced technology has advanced to a point where it can be disconcerting. It has even made it feasible to create films devoid of the need for prominent actors.
Tragically, many public figures, particularly actresses, have fallen prey to this sophisticated technology. In numerous instances, the likenesses of these heroines have been manipulated to cast them in an unfavorable light. The most recent victim of this technology is the beloved actress Rashmika Mandanna.
The issue came to the forefront when a journalist shared a video in which the face of an individual named Zara Patel was substituted with Rashmika Mandanna’s visage, courtesy of deepfake technology. This viral video even caught the attention of Amitabh Bachchan, who urged the government to take necessary legal actions.
Finally, Rashmika Mandanna addressed the circulating video featuring her manipulated image. She took to her Instagram and shared a story wherein she conveyed her emotions, stating, “It pains me to share this and discuss the deepfake video of me circulating online.”
She further remarked, “Such occurrences are genuinely frightening, not just for me but for all individuals who find themselves increasingly vulnerable due to the misuse of technology. Today, as a woman and as an actor, I am grateful for the protection and support of my family, friends, and well-wishers.”
“But if this had happened to me during my school or college years, I cannot fathom how I would have coped with it. This is an issue we must address as a community, with a sense of urgency, to prevent further instances of identity theft affecting us,” the actress concluded.
